The Vineyards |
|
Bodega Mengoba vineyards span over Espanillo, Valtuille, Villafranca de El Bierzo and Carracedo. |
On slaty, calcareous and stony grounds, old grapevines are grown in cup shape. |
Two varieties of grape are cultivated to make our white wine, Doña Blanca and Godello. Doña Blanca is born on the Espanillo and Carracedo vineyards, while godello is grown on little lots in Carracedo, Villafranca and Valtuille. The vine plants are between 25 and 80 years old. |
Godello and Doña Blanca are autochthonous varieties from El Bierzo country. Godello grapes are small and grow in thight bunches, with an oval shape and hard skin. |
On the contrary, Doña Blanca bunch is longer, and their grapes skin is thinner and more sensitive. |
Vineyards work is absolutely artisan, and Gregory Pérez takes great pride in that. They are even ploughed by cows, a very inusual practice nowadays in our country. This, together with green pruning and integrated fight treatments, allows the grapevines to receive products only when there is great risk of diseases. |
Furthermore, the high altitude in wich grapes are grown and the wind streams they receive greatly reduce the need for treatments. |
